Historic Sites of the Middle Ages

RP Funaokayama (National Historic Site)
Location: Murasakino Kitafunaoka-cho, Kita-ku, Kyoto City

Believed to be a reference point during construction of Heian-kyo, the mountain has a significant part in history. During the Heian period it was a place for religious training and leisure. Later it served as a burial ground, while in the Muromachi period it became a battleground.


RQ The grounds of Kozanji Temple (National Historic Site)
Location: Umegahata Toganoo-cho, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City

Kyoto contains the remnants of many temples and monasteries from which we can learn of the architecture and lifestyles of the Middle Ages. Kozanji still functions today, following its restoration early in the Kamakura period.


RR Cremation mound in the grounds of Kyoto University (Kyoto City Registered Historic Site)
Location: Oiwake-cho, Kitashirakawa, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City

The site was discovered in 1978. From the later Heian period and into the Kamakura period, it was enshrined as a cremation ground. As a source of information on changes in cremation techniques, the site is said to be invaluable.

A smaller temple built in the grounds of Daigoji, itself constructed between the later Heian and Muromachi periods.
