    In Kyoto, colorful festivals and cultural performances occur throughout the year against the backdrop of the seasons,reflecting a deep history and the passing of eras. Known as Kyoto's 'Big Four,' the Aoi Matsuri (Hollyhock Festival), the Gion Matsuri, Daimonji Gozan Okuribi, and the Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) are each representations of Japan's traditional celebrations and convey its rich ancestry and history. In addition to these four, Kyoto has a great number of other events and cultural entertainment based on history and tradition.
